CHOLDERTON AND DISTRICT WATER COMPANY DEBUTS NEW NITRATE TREATMENT PLANT FEATURING SYSTEM PROVIDED BY IONEX SG
SALISBURY, England, October 6, 2015 — Big celebrations today at century-old Cholderton and District Water Company as officials took the wraps off a new nitrate treatment plant. The new installation features a system provided by Ionex SG. On hand to mark the occasion with Cholderton officials was Molly Scott Cato, MEP in the South West England for the Green Party. Ionex SG CEO Phil Chandler also attended the opening.
Speaking at the event, Cholderton official Anthony Fry made these remarks:
“I should like to welcome you all to the official opening of the Cholderton and District Water Company’s Nitrate Treatment Plant. The installation of this plant has been made necessary in order to mitigate the threat posed by rising levels of nitrate pollution in the drinking water that we supply to 2,100 local residents.
The pollution has been caused largely by a combination of nitrogen based fertilizers used in high intensity arable agriculture and the discharge from Sewage Treatment Works.
We are indebted to Ionex SG Limited, a British-based company, who have designed, manufactured and installed the plant. Without their expertise in small scale water treatment plants we would have faced a very uncertain future and the drinking water supplies to our customers would have been placed at risk.
The Environment Agency has put in place a Safeguard Zone Characterization Action Plan to manage the catchment. This should, over the course of the next 5 years, bring down the level of nitrates in the Cholderton aquifer to levels that will in due course render treatment unnecessary.
It is with great pleasure that I should like to introduce Molly Scott Cato, who in the May 2014 elections for the European Parliament was elected as an MEP in the South West England for the Green Party.
Molly sits as a full member of the Parliaments Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and as a substitute member of the committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. We welcome the fact that Molly has kindly agreed to open the plant”
